What the Natives Do About Hurricanes

While there are a ton of really fancy storm windows out there which can be purchased as well as professionally installed, people in Key West, Florida usually choose to use their own version of homemade storm windows. There is something almost ritualistic for Floridians preparing for a hurricane and what would a hurricane be without all the hammering and nailing which can be heard from all over during the few days before a big storm. Locals don’t usually subscribe to the idea that the more you pay for something, the better it will hold up. Instead they trust their own elbow grease and expertise in boarding things up properly, using storm windows which they have labored to create. These storms windows are not your typical glass windows, rather that are usually made out of very thick wood and they are installed as a direct step in preparing for a hurricane.

Other types of storm windows stay up all year long, and work on a crack or by handle so they can be opened and closed at anytime. These homemade storm windows are used only during hurricane season and are thick enough to take just about any wind gusts a hurricane can deliver. Of course this doesn’t mean your house cannot be blown away by the storm. However, it might mean that your windows at least will remain intact! In any case, even if you don’t choose to follow the leader and make your own storm windows, make sure you use some sort of window protection as hurricanes can be quite deadly, all joking aside. If you live somewhere that is within about 2 miles of the shoreline, you may choose to go much further inland before the storm gets there. It is often better to be safe than to be sorry.
